NuMATS (Nurturing Mathematical Talents in Schools)
NuMATS is an innovative project initiated by SCERT Kerala. It aims at nurturing the young talents in Mathematics, of government and aided schools in Kerala and to prepare them to appear in national and international competitions like the Mathematical Olympiad. This project was launched during the academic year 2012-13.
Selection Procedure
In every academic year, five students (2 general, 1 SC, 1 ST, 1 Differently Abled) each of standard VI from Government & Aided schools are selected to appear for a test at the sub district level. In accordance with the performance of this sub district level test, 9 students (3 rural, 3 urban, 1 SC, 1 ST, 1 DA) will be selected from each sub district. These selected students have to appear for the state level aptitude test.
The state level aptitude test will be conducted in the month of January every year at fourteen district centres. The duration of this test is one hour and the maximum score is 50. The test consists of thirty items, of which the first twenty items are objective type questions. Each carries 1 score and the remaining ten items are descriptive type questions. Each carries 3 scores. Among the children who appeared for this test, from every district 5 students (2 rural, 2 urban, 1 SC/ST) are selected. Along with this, state wide 4 differently abled students will also selected. Thus, in every academic year, a total of 74 students are selected to the NuMaTS programme.
Academic Interventions
The SCERT provides academic support by organising a ten day vacation camp ( Usually in April ) and a one-day camp ( in December) and by giving different assignments in terms of project and lab work. During the vacation camp, we try our best to provide better exposure to all students.
